The Best Chocolate Chip Cookies

There are many great recipes for chocolate chip cookies, but this is a proven winner. The special twist ingredient that makes them so perfect? One-third cup finely ground walnuts. This is an Auntie's Favorite recipe!

The Best Chocolate Chip Cookies

1 cup sugar

1 cup brown sugar, packed

1/2 cup softened butter

1/2 cup shortening

2 eggs

1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

3 cups flour

1 tsp salt

1 tsp baking soda

12 oz bag good quality, semi-sweet chocolate chips

1/3 cup finely ground walnuts (close to, but not quite a powder)

Place sugar, brown sugar, butter, eggs and vanilla in a large bowl (or mixing bowl with flat beater). Mix until creamed. Add flour, salt and baking soda and combine well. Add chocolate chips and walnuts.

Drop by rounded teaspoons onto greased baking sheet, 2 inches apart. Bake at 375° for 10 to 12 minutes. Once out of the oven, allow to set for a few minutes on the baking sheet before transferring to a wire rack to finish cooling.

Makes about 3 1/2 dozen cookies.

The inspiration for this recipe originated in a Kitchen Aid instruction guide and cookbook from the early 1990s. I made a few changes and voila! Chocolate chip cookies are such traditional comfort treats. My Auntie Jean was an outstanding chocolate chip cookie baker. At every (and I do mean every) family gathering she would bring a bread bag (recycling an old bread bag, what a concept!) full of fresh cookies for everyone to enjoy.
